How do I cite in MLA style?

The latest edition (9th) of the MLA Handbook is on reserve at the circulation desk. If you're not able to come in and check it out, we'd recommend looking for guidance on Purdue's Online Writing Lab (OWL) for MLA Style or the MLA Style Blog.

Here's a video that explains how to cite all types of sources, including sources with multiple containers:

Elements of a Citation

Citations are created with these core elements in this order, with the listed punctuation. Include all of the information you can if applicable:

  1. Author.
  2. Title of source.
  3. Title of container,
  4. Other contributors,
  5. Version,
  6. Number,
  7. Publisher,
  8. Publication date,
  9. Location.

Here are some examples in one container written out in the proper formatting:

Book

Last Name, First. Book. Publisher, Publication Date, Location.

Journal

Last name, First. "Article." Journal, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location.
